On-call position. 4 to 8 hours per day when called - Primary work schedule is swing shift and may start as early as 1:00 p.m. and end as late as 12:30 a.m. Occasional work for day shift and grave yard shift with varying hours.

        Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience as a custodian or other related experience which demonstrates strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials and equipment; successful completion of Vancouver Public Schools Standard Operating Procedures training regarding cleaning procedures and chemical use and safety
  • Good mechanical aptitude, with the ability to learn to maintain the specific HVAC and other systems of the assigned school
  • Maintain WISHA approved first aid certification
  • Current ISSAS (International Sanitary Supply Association Standards) district training and certification

 

        Requirements:

  • Ability to work flexible hours when necessary
  • Ability to communicate readily and effectively with district wide staff, students and parents and community resource individuals using all communication modes
  • Ability to sustain poise and confidence in managing emotional and difficult situations
  • Self motivated, with good organizational skills
  • Ability to read and handle large quantities of paperwork
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements
  • Ability to spend most of the work day standing, lifting, and walking
  • Ability to bend and move well enough to mop floors
  • Ability to lift up to 1/3 of your body weight up to 60 pounds
  • Ability to climb ladders to change light bulbs and do other tasks
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of people, in person, electronically, in writing, and over the phone and/or radio
  • Ability to see well enough to inspect cleanliness of work areas

 

         Essential Functions:

  • Perform assigned cleaning tasks, including cleaning of rest rooms, cafeteria, floors, carpets, walls, furniture, and black/white boards. Empty trash containers; refill towel, soap, and tissue dispensers. Work may require use of power tools and/or hazardous chemicals; must know how to use them safely.
  • In the course of work, inspect building, grounds, and equipment for safety and for repairs needed. Make temporary emergency repairs; write work orders for further repair. Make minor repairs to furniture and equipment.
  • Prepare facilities for after-school activities, including setting up chairs and tables, opening building, and assisting groups. Clean up and secure building after activities; check and lock all doors and windows.
  • Operate HVAC system in building where swing shift custodian not assigned
  • Perform duties of head custodian or other custodial positions when necessary
  • Treat co-workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, and practice the behaviors that are expected of our students
  • Work in a flexible and cooperative manner
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned

Salary range:  New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range.
